Do you think it is more important to fix a car bumper or pay off credit card debt?

My girlfriend is about to pay off her car (4 payments left). She has a small dent in her rear bumper (bout 3 inches in width and 1/2 inch in depth ) by backing into a pole. She wants to spend over 400 bucks to fix the bumper. I think she should spend the money on a delinquent bill to better her low credit score. Our goal is to buy a house. She told me she is going to fix the bumper no matter what I say. What do you think?

If she is making this kind of decision with regard to her bills she is in need of some serious credit counseling. Letting the bill become delinquent could result in a court judgment and she could lose the car, bumper and all. Pay the debt!

pay off your credit card debt.

Personally, I would pay off the credit card debt and then use my credit card to pay for the repairs to the bumper.

Definitely pay off the credit card. The bumper is made to take dings, and obviously if she%26#039;s done it once it may happen again, so why fix it?

Also every time you go over 30 days past your payment due date you are going to wreck your credit, it will stick with you for 7 yrs!

She should pull her credit report and look at it. You can get one free every year from all 3 bureaus. www.annualcreditreport.com I believe is the link.

If she is this irresponsible now I would think long and hard before getting involved in a 30 yr loan. If she blows off the payments it will be all on you. I%26#039;d be certain you can afford it yourself, and preferrably buy it just in your name.

Since fixing the dent is not essential and does not affect the car%26#039;s manoeuvrability in any way, it can wait! Of course it is much more important to pay the bill and improving on her credit score - she%26#039;ll also save money, since she%26#039;ll be charged more interest on arrears, whereas fixing the bumper will cost the same today as it will next month. (You may have to set down very specific payment rules when buying a house together!)

If it%26#039;s her car it%26#039;s her decision, but I wouldn%26#039;t worry about the bumper unless it was in danger of falling off, interfering with driving (e.g. rubbing a tire) or the repair was required by law.

I agree that I would spend the money to pay off my debt. But, on the other hand, maybe the bumper is more important to her than owning a house.

When you talk to her, I would acknowledge the importance of fixing the bumper. I wouldn%26#039;t be able to stand a dent like that either, especially if it would only cost $400 to fix. But tell her that it shouldn%26#039;t be her first priority. First, she needs to pay all her bills so that she is current. Then she can allocate money to fix the car.

However, it sounds like she doesn%26#039;t manage her finances very well, and if she doesn%26#039;t want to listen to your advice and continues to mismanage her money, then you should reconsider buying a house or anything with her in the future.
