Does anyone have any tips on settling debt with credit card companies?

i.e. any tricks they might pull to get you to pay more than the settlement price? The lowest they will settle (50%, 45%?) etc.

1st rule of thumb, NEVER deal with a collection agency!

If you%26#039;ve been negligent on payment for quite a while do this:

If dealing directly with a credit card company, or companies, a good thing to do is apply for a cash loan from a bank. Figure out how much cash you have, then call the credit card companies and tell them why you cant pay and how many companies you owe. Be honest and usually they will let you pay off your outstanding debt a quite a discount. I%26#039;ve seen them let you pay off at 50% of debt if they think they will never normally recover funds.

Always get the transaction agreement in writing before paying! Over the phone agreements are not a good idea!!

I have done this a few times. Explain to them you are hard pressed for money and dont see your financial situation changing anytime soon. and negotiate, ALWAYS start low, they will give you a higher number but bargain down. Remember they pay PENNIES on the dollar for your account so any amount is profit to them. But bargain and stay firm, I have never paid more than 60% usually they will settle for 50% or so. If they absolutely will not bargain, I would even suggest saying something like %26quot;well I will call back when I do have the money%26quot; They may then come down quite a bit. These people work to get you on the phone and get your money, they will do whatever it takes to get you to pay SOMETHING. I would not agree to payments though, these do NOT help your credit at all. Only paying it off will help. Also do Not give them any updated info, they will play hardball so be prepared, and stay firm!! Good luck. You might check out the link below. It has helped me tons!

Call the company and offer to pay them half of what you owe, right now..that day and I am sure that they will take the offer, if not they will come back with a counter offer..then if you can %26#039;t do that you give them another offer...you finally will come up with a amount you both can live with. And you can do the same with a collection company. If they won%26#039;t deal with you tell them you will go right to the company they are working with.

I believe the best deal is when the credit card debt has been sent to a collection agency. From experience, it is better negotiating position. Leverage. If the collector does not follow all the rules of the Federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act or promises you he will remove it from your credit if you pay, you can leverage it down a lot or even to zero.
