I got a call from some company that handles credit card debts saying that I owe around 2K for a card that I closed and didnt pay off. I settled with them for around 1K which I paid on the phone. They said they will send me a letter saying this issue is closed. But they sent me a letter in around 3 months saying that I owe even more then 2K. Can it be a scam and how should I handle these situations?

Scam? I got a call from some company that handles credit card debts saying that I owe around 2K for a card?

There are three possibilities here.

1. It could be a scam

2. The company has to write the forgiven debt off. But in order to write off forgiven debt, it has to know how much of the debt is forgiven. Therefore, they take the money you give them and subtract it from the total owed. Then, they generate an invoice for the new balance and that new balance is transferred to a different account. Sometimes, a statement is sent to you as a result of the regular billing procedure.

3. The money you paid could have been credited to the wrong account.

Contact the company that arranged the settlement and ask them to look into this.
