Usually a summons is a court document to appear in court.
You should read it carefully to determine:
Which court
Where and when you are expected to appear.
Any resulting judgement can appear on your credit report up to 10 years.
IF it is a valid court summons and you fail to be there, the court may grant the creditor legal judgment against you which could lead to seizing your bank account to the amount claimed plus court costs and attorney fees. It is also a path to wage garnishment if you do not have enough money in the bank.
IF you do have enough money somewhere, you might try to negotiate a settlement with the creditor ... possibly at a discount. Be very sure to get the court date canceled as part of the settlement.
GET ALL such AGREEMENTS IN WRITING AND SIGNED by them
I just received a summon for failing to settle a credit card debt. What is a summon and what should I do?
The summons is to court where a judge can order you to pay up or start a deduction from your pay check. Good luck dude...

Without seeing the summons, its hard to understand completely whats going on.
You may need to get an attorney involved. In fact, Lexington Law focuses specifically on credit law issues. They are very reasonable price wise as well.

The summons should explain it all. Its an order to appear in court. You are probably being sued for the credit card bill.
If its not small claims court you may need a lawyer.

have you ever been to traffic court == same thing only this debaters court -- do not worry they did away with debaters penal system years ago -- although i think they should be reinstated. any way the judge will tell you in no un certain terms of how you are going to pay the debt you owe and than if you do not pay then you can go to jail on charges of comp-temp or failing to abide by a court order. at this point i would not hire a lawyer -- you will need his fee to help pay off your debt.
