If a credit card debt has been written off for 11 years can they still collect on it?

NO. It is too old of a debt. The statute of limitations on debt collections in most jurisdictions in the United States is seven years. Less in some states.

If you have a bill collector trying to collect on it, tell him to shove it. He is probably a scam artist anyway. No legitimate bill collector (if there is such an animal) will try to collect on a debt that old.

The thing to remember about bill collectors is this: ALL BILL COLLECTORS LIE ALL THE TIME. The only other group of people that I have ever heard this said about is convicts. And I will trust the convict to keep his/her word before I will a bill collector. When dealing with them if they will not put their agreement with you in writing BEFORE you pay the debt, they are lieing to you.

Depends on the states Statute of Limitations which is usually 7 years

Each state has a %26quot;statute of limitations%26quot; law. They all vary from, but average around 6 years. Check the link below for your state.

None of them are over 10 years, so you are safe. Just send the collection agency a letter informing them that the SOL has run out, and they are simply wasting their time harassing you. Also demand that they validate this debt, and inform them to NOT call you, your family, friends or employer.

Read the Fair Debt Collection Act. Collection agents depend on your lack of knowledge of this law to get away with their violations. Once they know you understand your rights, they will leave you alone.

They can try forever but they can%26#039;t take any legal action to collect after the statute of limitations has expired.
